Your Complete Guide to Boswellia Serrata

Reading time: < 5 min

Most of the time, when people come to my Marc Dress fitness training lessons searching for the best supplements to support their fitness routines, they’re not expecting miracles.

Most supplements can help you with some basic things, like reducing inflammation after a rough workout or boosting your fat-burning potential. However, there’s also a handful of treatments out there that actually do a lot more than you might think.

For instance, Boswellia Serrata is a substance typically used for reducing joint and whole-body inflammation, but it could be capable of so much more than this too. In fact, some studies suggest that it might be able to help fight off cancer.

So, what’s the truth?

Well, by the time you’re finished reading, you’re going to find out. Here, we’re going to cover everything you need to know about Boswellia Serrata, and what it can do for your body.

What is Boswellia Serrata?

Known to some as Indian Frankincense, Boswellia Serrata is an exceptional kind of herb that’s frequently used in traditional Ayurvedic treatments, and in ceremonial events. Boswellia Serrata has been used in the medical community throughout the world for many years. However, we’re only recently beginning to explore the possibilities of Boswellia Serrata in the western world.

One thing that Boswellia Serrata can’t do, is improve your weight-loss or muscle building strategy – so if that’s your goal, this isn’t the article for you. However, there are some studies that seem to indicate that it is good for getting rid of unwanted pain and supporting better joint health.

Most people pair Boswellia Serrata with curcumin to help make the most of its antioxidant potential. However, there is a lot more to this substance than antioxidants alone. The benefits of Boswellia often tie into it’s properties as an anti-inflammatory substance.

People who take Boswellia Serrata swear it helps with everything from intestinal inflammation to joint inflammation. Additionally, this substance can help to support overall better health. Some more drastic claims suggest that the herb is excellent for reducing headaches, improving mood, and boosting your immune system.

So, what’s the real deal with Boswellia Serrata?

Inflammation and Boswellia Serrata

The primary function of Boswellia Serrata is to inhibit an enzyme in your body known as LOX or Lipoxygenase. This substance turns otherwise anti-inflammatory mediators in your body into inflammatory ones. It’s probably one of the most important enzymes out there when you’re looking for a way to improve the inflammatory defenses in your body.

It’s worth noting that while there are plenty of over-the-counter NSAIDs like Naproxen that will help to target the alternative enzyme to LOX, otherwise known as COX, Boswellia Serrata is the only herb that’s known to be a potent substance for targeting LOX.

Boswellia Serrata isn’t just great at making your joints less prone to inflammation. This substance is also great at keeping your entire body free from unnecessary swelling. According to some studies into rodents, the substance has been effective at reducing colitis and eliminating problems with inflammation of the intestines. Although human trial results have been slightly less impressive, they still showed that Boswellia Serrata has a largely positive impact on the intestinal system.

Various studies have shown potent results when Boswellia Serrata is used to treat problems like ulcerative colitis. One study found that around 82% of subjects went into remission when taking this substance. There have also been studies that show the impact of the herb on people who suffer from Crohn’s disease.

Of course, as with most things in the herbal supplement world, it’s essential that we conduct more research into the potential anti-inflammatory effects of Boswellia Serrata before we make too much of a sweeping claim about its abilities.

Cancer and Boswellia Serrata

Importantly, as we mentioned above, Boswellia Serrata does have some links to cancer. However, for the time being, the information available about this substance is limited. Boswellia Serrata definitely looks promising for cancer patients. However, it seems to have more potent interactions with people who suffer from pancreatic cancer – one of the most lethal forms of cancer, breast cancer, and brain cancer.

Some studies, such as one that looked at the impact of Boswellia Serrata on mice with pancreatic tumors, show amazing results. For instance, this study found that it was possible to reduce the size of the pancreatic tumor by half in a mouse using Boswellia Serrata. Other studies have since backed these results up.

Although it’s difficult to say anything for certain at this time, it may be that the reason for this herb’s anti-cancer effects is that it’s an anti-inflammatory substance that suppresses the invasion and growth of tissue in the body.

Finishing Thoughts on Boswellia Serrata

The most important thing to remember if you’re looking to accomplish incredible results with Boswellia Serrata is that it’s just one herb- even if it appears to be a mighty and potent one. If you’re taking the substance to improve your joint health, then there’s a good chance you’ll start to notice a difference in the way that you feel within a week. Additionally, you might be able to move your joints more easily too – which is great if you’re the kind of person who suffers with pain in the knees and arms.

Some people also suggest that Boswellia Serrata will help to calm your nerves – although there are no human trials to back this up yet. The best way to use this herb is as a supplement to help you fight back against inflammation and keep your body as pain-free as possible. We can’t recommend this substance as a way to fight back against cancer because the research into this area is so new, but it’s safe to say that the herb deserves further investigation.

Still, if you’re looking for a joint supporting solution that’s also an anti-metastatic and anti-inflammatory compound, then you can’t go wrong with Boswellia Serrata. Just make sure that you follow the instructions given by your doctor when you’re taking it. As with any other herb, the last thing you want is for your new supplement to interact poorly with a medication that you’re already taking.
