Everything You Should Know about Stevia

Today, it’s fair to say that most of us eat far too much sugar. According to research recently conducted by scientists in the University of Washington, sugar added to our regular foods might account for about 14% of our full caloric intake. In other words, if you want to learn how to lose belly fat, sugar might be the number one thing to avoid.

If you apply that 14% of sugar to the average calorie intake of an adult, that’s about 300 calories from added sugars that we’re shovelling into our bodies. Unfortuantely, this is a huge problem to our health and fitness. Many sugary foods can prompt us to overeat and gain weight because they don’t trigger the sense of satiety we get from whole foods.  What’s more, as your online fitness coach might tell you, the more sugar you eat, the more you displace calories that could otherwise come from nutritionally-rich foods.

The more that sugar prompts your body to suffer from obesity and a lack of essential nutrients, the more your health will suffer, leading to a range of potential adverse health conditions, including diabetes and more.

The various problems with sugar outline why so many people have begun turning to alternative solutions for sweetness that provide the same benefits of sugar in taste, without as many calories and additional problems. Here, we’re going to discuss the most popular natural sweetener available on the market today: Stevia.

Defining Stevia

The first step in understanding Stevia is defining it. Stevia is a natural sweetener that is made from the leaves of the Stevia plant known as Stevia rebaudiana. Many indigenous people have used these delicious leaves as a solution for sweetening their foods for a number of years.

Today, many people choose stevia over other solutions when they’re attempting to figure out how to lose belly fat, because it contains no calories and has no severe impact on blood sugar levels. Stevia is also well suited to baking and cooking too. Though stevia extracts are produced under a number of brand names, the chemical makeup of these solutions all contain molecules called steviol glycosides.

These molecules give stevia it’s sweet taste, and they are far sweeter than the table sugar we’re used to, which is why you can generally use less stevia to get the same taste you would experience with sugar.

Is it Really a Zero-Calorie Option?

The simple answer to this question is yes.

Despite being incredibly sweet, Stevia doesn’t contain any calories. Although technically it does contain some calories, your body is not able to digest them in the same way as other foods. Unlike table sugar which can be broken down into fructose and glucose – which are absorbed into the blood stream for energy, steviol glycosides can move through your small intestine tract. They are only fully digested when they hit the large intestine, and instead of going into your bloodstream they simply get eaten by the bacteria in your gut.

Is Stevia Safe?

Perhaps the most important thing to note about Stevia is that a large amount of research has shown that it is absolutely safe when it is ingested normally. Some studies may even indicate that Stevia is good for your health because it can work to lower blood sugar levels and blood pressure. However, these, findings are somewhat inconsistent.

Unfortunately, the positive findings around stevia are somewhat marred by the presence of a few negative results in animal research that may indicate this substance could contribute to lost fertility. Crucially, it’s important to note that these rats were prepubertal, which can make them particularly susceptible to the effects of stevia doses, and the doses given were extremely high.

The crucial information to be aware of is that multiple studies show that steviol glycosides have no negative effects – even when offered at high doses.

The Bottom Line

When it comes to learning how to lose belly fat, Stevia is a fantastic choice for sweetening your beverages and foods. It is natural, sweet, and contains absolutely no calories that can be digested by your body. What’s more, if it’s consumed at reasonable levels, it shouldn’t have any negative effects on your health.

For many people, stevia will be the ideal solution when compared with artificial sweeteners when it comes to getting that sugary kick.
